Founded in 1804, The New York Historical Society has holdings covering four centuries of American history, and include one of the world’s greatest collections of historical artifacts, American art and other materials documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York City and State.
Forty thousand of the Society’s most treasured pieces are on permanent display in the Henry Luce III Center for the Study of American Culture, (located on the Historical Society's 4th floor), and a self-guided audio tour brings these artifacts to life with anecdotes and stories.
Artifacts relating to New York's participation in local and global events, among them the slave trade, the American Revolution, and the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, chronicle the history of New York.
The museum's collection includes George Washington's camp bed at Valley Forge to the world's largest collection of Tiffany lamps. Paintings, sculpture, furniture, tools for home and trade, textiles, metals, ceramics and glass are displayed in visible storage.
Besides the permanent display there are many temporary Exhibitions at the Society.
Free guided tours are available at 1pm of some temporary display & 3pm (2pm Sunday) of permanent display.
