The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian opened at the George Gustav Heye Center, New York in October 1994. (There are also branches in Washington, DC and Maryland)
Permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as a range of public programs—including music and dance performances, films, and symposia—explore the diversity of the Native people of the Americas.
The museum's extensive collections, assembled largely by George Gustav Heye (1874–1957), include artifacts from Paleo-Indian to contemporary arts and crafts. The museum's holdings also include film and audiovisual collections, paper archives, and a photography archive of approximately 90,000 images depicting both historic and contemporary Native American life.
"Home of NMAI's George Gustav Heye Center, the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House is one of the most splendid Beaux Arts buildings in New York. Rich in architectural and historic significance, the Custom House is a National Historic Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places."
