MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK




Founded in 1923, The Museum of the City of New York explores the past, present, and future of New York City.

The museum presents a variety of exhibitions, public programs, and publications, all investigating what gives New York its singular character.

It has 1.5 million objects and images in its collection, including Costumes and Textiles, Decorative Arts, Paintings and Sculpture, Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, Theater and toys, part of which is displayed at various exhibitions.

As well as many temporary exhibitions, there are ongoing exhibitions including A History of Broadway and theater in New York City; New York Interiors (1690-1906) features elements of New York domestic environments from the late 17th through the early 20th centuries; Protect looks at how fire and fire safety have shaped New York City throughout its history; New York Toy Stories exploring New York childhood through toys, games, piggy banks, cast-iron vehicles, and the Stettheimer doll house – all owned or made by New Yorkers; Trade: A History of New York City Ports and Commerce looking at how commerce in New York City got started. Wander through the ports of New York and discover their vital role in building the city. From beaver pelts and defense systems to Wall Street stock tickers and the park at Battery Park, explore the changing face of New York City waterfront; Timescapes a 25-minute multimedia experience, traces the growth of New York City from a settlement of a few hundred Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans to its present status as one of the world’s great cities.
