Waiheke Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, is only a 35 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland.
There is a permanent population of around 8,000 residents, but can swell dramatically in the main holiday season - December & January - so best to avoid this time of the year if you wish enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.
It's a great place to visit to enjoy stunning scenery either by coastal walks, which can be very hard, or you can rent a car, bike or scooter for the day.
On the island you will find many wineries, vineyards, olive groves, forests, beaches, restuarants, cafes, craft shops, as well as art studios, markets and museums, particularly in Oneroa Bay. If you wish to stay longer than a day there is plenty of accommodation.
The ferry docks at Martiatia, where you can start your coastal walk or hire your transportation. Also from here you can get a bus that takes you to the popular Oneroa Bay or you can walk there in 15 minutes.
