
The Auckland Art Gallery opened in 1888.
The gallery has a collection numbering over 12,500 works, including major holdings of New Zealand historic, modern and contemporary art, and works by Maori and Pacific Island artists, as well as European painting, sculpture and print collections ranging in date from 1376 to the present day, although not all is on display. The gallery also hosts travelling international exhibitions.
Its main building 'Toi o Tamaki' (Corner Wellesley & Kitchener Streets) is one of the city's oldest civic buildings, a New Zealand Historic Places Trust category 1 building, much admired for its beauty and timeless architecture. Originally designed by Melbourne-based architects Grainger and D'Ebro, the building has undergone numerous adaptations and transformations since it opened . However, the building is now closed for a major re-developmernt, and is expected to re-open in 2010. In the meantime, the gallery has moved across the road to a new premises and called "The New Auckland Art Gallery" (Corner Wellesley & Lorne Streets).
