TRANSPORT IN MALTA

Malta does not have trains, but it does have an extensive bus network. Nearly all buses start and end in Valletta, which is OK if you are staying in Valletta and Sliema/St Julian's/Paceville, but may be inconvenient if staying in beach and rural areas as you would have to take a bus to Valletta or a connecting bus to get to various parts of the island. Therefore, car hire, which is reasonably priced, would be a good option in this case.

Buses: Malta's vintage buses (some around 50 years old) are an attraction in themselves. They are mostly uncomfortable, but are very cheap, starting at around 47 cent and rising to about 1.30 euro for the longest journey. Although 1, 3, 5 and 7 day passes are available making it even cheaper if you intend on using buses often. You buy tickets from the driver. Buses generally run from early morning to about 10pm (later in some popular areas like Paceville). Pick up a bus timetable leaflet.

Taxi
Malta's white taxis are the ones you can pick you up off the street and can be expensive. Try and agree a price, or ensure the meter is turned on. The black cabs can be cheaper, but you must be prebooked (+356 2137 4141)
