MALTA - TOP SIGHTS



01  Valletta

Recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980, the City of Valletta is the capital of Malta with only a population of around 6,500 and measures less than 1 sq km (0.4 sq miles). It contains buildings from the 16th century onwards and is like an open museum in itself! Many of Malta's the best museums and attractions are here, including St John's Co-Cathedral, Grand Master's Palace and National Museum of Fine Arts.

02  Gozo

Gozo is the sister island of Malta, and the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago. Gozo is easily reached from Malta by ferry - the journey taking about 25 minutes. Major attractions include Victoria, The capital of Gozo with its Citadella, (fortified city); Ggantija Temples; and Dwejra a natural beauty spot. The island boasts a number of beaches, the best of which is the wide, sandy beach of Ramla Bay.

03  Mdina / Rabat

A stroll through the medieval narrow streets of sleepy, charming Mdina, which has changed little in the last 1000 years, should be near the top of things to do for any first time visitor to Malta. Neighbouring Rabat is less attractive, but a visit to the catacombs of St. Paul and St. Agatha is worthwhile and a sure adventure for younger children.

04  Sliema / St Julian's / Paceville

Adjacent to each other on the eastern coast of Malta, around 4 miles (7km) from Valletta. Together they comprise the fashionable residential areas, main coastal resort towns, top hotels, best shops and nightlife. However, there are no notable cultural attractions!

05  Three Cities
(Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua)

Three cities enclosed by the massive line of fortification created by the Knights of St John. Best seeing on a self-guided walk. Hightlights Fort St Angelo; The Inquisitor's Palace; Church of St Lawrence; Parish Church of Immaculate Conception; and Safe Haven Gardens for its famous vedette and great harbour views across to Valletta.

06  Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (Paola)

The Hypogeum is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is a subterranean structure dating to the Saflieni phase in Maltese prehistory - 3000-2500 BC. It is the only prehistoric underground temple in the world.

7  Hagar Qim Temple & Mnajdra Temple

These Megalithic Temples are said to be amongst the most ancient religious sites on Earth, and are described by the World Heritage Sites committee as "unique architectural masterpieces." They date from around 3600 - 3200 BC.

08  Mosta Dome

The gigantic dome of Mosta's parish Church is said to be the 4th-largest church dome in Europe (Note: Some say 3rd largest!). Built from 1833 to 1871 on the site of a previous church, it was designed by Giorgio Grognet, whose plans were closely based on the Pantheon in Rome.

09  Marsaxlokk (Fishing village)

The main attraction is its Bay that is full of decorative traditional Maltese fishing boats called Luzzus, with the mythical eye of Osiris painted on their prows. The painted eyes on these luzzus are believed to protect the boats from evil.
