Ueno-koen was Tokyo's first public park, opening in 1873.
Ueno-koen Park is a great place to visit as it has many tourist attractions within its grounds, including Tokyo National Museum, National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, National Science Museum, some temples as well as Japan's oldest zoo (1882).
At the park's south entrance the statue of Takamori Saigo was erected in 1898. He played a central role in realising the Meiji Restoration of 1868.
The large pond in Ueno Park called Shinobazu Pond, has a temple for the goddess of Benten standing on the island in the middle of the pond. The pond is at its best in July and August when its lotus plants bloom.
Ueno Park is also popular during the cherry blossom season (Spring) for its more than 1000 cherry trees.
