TOKYO NATIONAL MUSEUM




Established 1872, the Tokyo National Museum is the oldest and largest museum in Japan. Displays include Japanese and Asian antiquities, as well as archeological remains. Only a portion of the museum's collection is displayed at any one time.

The museum has four galleries:

Honkan (Japanese Gallery): Provides a general view of Japanese art including sculpture, ceramics, and laquerware.

Toyokan (Asian Gallery): Dedicated to art and antiquities of Asia, including those from China, the Korean peninsula, Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and Egypt.

Heiseikan (Japanese Archaeology): Japanese history through the Archaeological objects from several thousand B.C. up to late 19th century.

The Gallery of Horyuji Treasures: A group of buddhist art treasures originally donated to the Imperial family by the Horyuji temple

The Museum is located in Ueno Park where several other museums are located including:

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
National Science Museum
