
The Bridgestone Museum of Art opened in 1952 based on the individual collection of Shojiro Ishibashi, founder of The Bridgestone Company.
The collection includes work by Rembrandt, Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh.
The museum has a collection of around 1,600 works of art, chiefly Impressionists, Post-Impressionists and twentieth-century art.
The works are divided into the following categories.Paintings includes works on canvas, board and paper such as oil paintings, frescoes and mosaics. Drawings includes works on paper such as watercolors, gouaches, ink drawings, and pencil drawings. Prints includes woodblock prints, copper plate prints and lithographs. Sculpture includes three-dimensional works in stone, bronze and plaster. Ceramics includes pottery, most of it from Ancient Greece.
For preservation reasons, watercolors, drawings and prints are not on permanent display. They are, however, exhibited for limited periods.
