
Established in November 1933 as the second large-scale public art museum in Japan following Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The collection consists of some 2000 items including Japanese paintings, Western paintings, sculpture, handicrafts, calligraphy and prints mainly after the Meiji Period (1868-1912) and related to Kyoto. Exhibitions of the works of foreign artists of collected works etc. are also held sponsored by the municipal government and art-related organizations.
