01   Hozu Riverboat Ride

Take a 2 hour journey down the Hozu river in a kind of 'wooden' boat through the mountains from Kameoka to Kyoto's scenic Arashiyama. The trip takes you through a few harmless rapids and some beautiful scenery.

   Chion-in

Chionin is the head temple of the Jodo (Pure Land) sect of Japanese Buddhism. The temple was established in 1234, on the site where Honen (the founder of Jodo Buddhism) had taught and fasted to death.

Has many subtemples including Daisen-in temple, whose small rock garden is considered one of the best. Ryogen-in temple, which is known for its five gardens. And Koto-in, which is famous for its maple trees, particularly in mid November.

Hongan-ji Temple was built as the head temple of the Jodo shin-shu sect of Buddhism. However, Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu decided to split the sect into two branches to weaken its influence. Nanzen-Ji is one of the most well known Rinzai Zen temples in Japan. Its main building, the Seiryo-den, is famous for a beautiful rock garden and sliding doors (fusuma).

   Ninnaji

Founded in 888 by Emperor Uda. Most of the surviving buildings date from the 17th century, including a five storied pagoda. Among noteworthy temple buildings are the Kondo and Miedo halls, which were moved from Kyoto Imperial Palace and rebuilt here.(A World Heritage Site)

   Ryozen Kannon

The 24-metre concrete image of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (the Bodhisattva of Mercy) was erected by the late Hirosuke Ishikawa in 1955 to honour the Japanese dead of World War II.

   Yasaka Shrine

Also known as Gion Shrine - is a Shinto shrine. Famous for the Gion Festval in July. Also popular for traditional Japanese New Year rituals and celebrations and in April, the crowds pass through the temple on their way to Maruyama Park, a popular cherry blossom viewing site.
