Officially this temple, founded in 853 by Priest Shinjo (797-873), is named Zenrin-ji, but it became known as Eikan-do in honour of the memory of buddhist priest Eikan (1033-1111) who made great efforts to save poor people in the 11th-century.
It is the home temple of the Jodo Seizan Zenrin-ji sect.
The temple is famous for the Looking-back Amida statue and also for its maple trees in autumn.
