DAITOKUJI - TEMPLE COMPLEX




Daitokuji is the head temple of the Rinzai sect's Daitoku school of Zen Buddhism . It was founded in 1319, but was destroyed by a fire and was rebuilt in the 16th century.

This complex has many subtemples - not all are open to the public. Some that are include Daisen-in temple, whose small rock garden (1509) by Kogaku-Zenji, is considered one of the best. Also, Ryogen-in temple, which is known for its five gardens. And Koto-in, which is famous for its maple trees, particularly in mid November.

Times and Prices
Admission: Each temple in the complex charges around 400 to 600 Yen. If you go to all of them it can add up to be expensive.
Hours: 09:00 - 17:00 (16.30 winter)
