CHION-IN

Chionin is the head temple of the Jodo (Pure Land) sect of Japanese Buddhism. The temple was established in 1234, on the site where Honen (the founder of Jodo Buddhism) had taught and fasted to death.

Due to fires, the present buildings date from the 17th century. Among them is the Sanmon gate (1619), Japan's largest temple gate, standing 24 meters tall.

Chionin's temple bell is the heaviest in Japan, at 74 tons. It is said to take 17 monks to ring it at the New Year ceremony.
