(at Barberini Palace)

The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica (National Gallery of Ancient Art) at Palazzo Barberini has a collection of Italian paintings of the 13th to 16th centuries including Raphael's 'La fornarina' and works by Caravaggio.

Highlights also include the illusionist ceiling frescoes by Pietro Da Cortona in the Gran Salone room.

The Palazzo Barberini was designed for Pope Urban VIII (Maffeo Barberini). It was started in 1627 by Italian architect Carlo Maderno assisted by his nephew Francesco Borromini, and finished by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini in 1633, following the death of Maderno in 1629.
