PALATINO

The ruins of the palaces of Augustus (63 BC – 14 AD), Tiberius (42 BC – 37 AD) and Domitian (51 AD – 96 AD), amongst others, are on The Palatino (Palatine Hill).

Other buildings include what is believed to be the residence of Livia (58 BC – 29 AD), the wife of Augustus, which has some interesting frescoes. Also of interest is the Hippodrome of Domitian, which is thought to be a Stadium for foot races. However, its exact purpose is disputed.

Today, archaeologists are still making new discoveries as they continue to excavate Palatine Hill.

Other highlights include some fine views of the Roman Forum on one side of the Palatino, and the "Circus Maximus on the other, and there is also a museum.

According to Roman mythology, the Palatine Hill was the location of the cave - known as the Lupercal - where Romulus and Remus were found by the she-wolf that kept them alive. (In January 2007 Italian archeologist Irene Iacopi announced that she had probably found the legendary Lupercal cave beneath the remains of Augustus' residence, the Domus Livia (House of Livia)

NOTE: You will need some kind of map or guide book of the Palatino, otherwise you will find it difficult to know what you are looking at. Only a few of the ruins have names, and there are no information notices describing anything, and they do not provide you with anything when buying your ticket!!
