05   Altar of Peace
(Museum of Ara Pacis)

The Alter of peace was commissioned by the Roman Senate in 13 BC to honour the triumphal Gallic and Spanish campaigns of the Roman emperor Augustus. In 1938, at the behest of Benito Mussolini, the Ara Pacis was reconstructed using discovered fragmentary sculptures.

06   Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano

The cathedral church of Rome and the official seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope. Said to be the first Christian basilica to be built in Rome, it was, until the late 14th century, the pope's principal residence.

07   The Mouth of Truth

A huge stone face most famous for being a lie detector! It was believed that if one told a lie with his hand in the mouth of the sculpture, it would be bitten off. It is located in the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin

08   Circus Maximus

An ancient hippodrome, thought to have been founded in the 6th century BC. Julius Caesar expanded the Circus around 50 BC. Chariot racing was the most important event at the Circus. The last race in the Circus Maximus is thought to have occurred in 550 AD. Today, nothing is left of Circus Maximus, except a large, green space that is now used for concerts, meeting etc.

10   Ancient Appian Way
(Via Appia Antica)

4th century BC road built in order to set up a fast communication between Rome and Capua. Today you can walk 8 miles of the Appian Way. The road is lined with ancient ruins and tombs of noble Roman families. You will also find several Catacombs.
