The Domus Aurea (Golden House) was Nero's villa complex erected after the great fire of 64 A.D. It was built in the few years between the fire and Nero's suicide in 68 AD.
The villa complex was set in a vast landscaped area with an artificial lake in its centre where the Colosseum now stands - it is thought to have covered over 100 acres.
Most of the complex has now disappeared, but following excavation, some parts remain, which you can visit today.
What remains of The Domus Aurea is actually underground as buildings have since been built on top of the complex so warm clothing is advised when visiting.
The walls and ceilings of Nero's palace were decorated with fresco paintings, and although some still remain they are not in the best of condition.
