
This Benedictine church was founded in the 10th century.
The interior has a nave and two aisles, and is considered to contain the finest art collection in Perugia after the Galleria Nationale dell’Umbria
The 16th century wooden choir is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy
The church contains many of frescos and paintings by various artists including Antonio Vassillachhi, Giovanni Maria Bisconti, Benedotto Bandiera, Orazio Alfani, Girolamo Danti, Giorgio Vasari, Guido Reni and Perugino. (TIP: Take a torch as the church is dark in places)
The tower was built in the 13th century, with the upper section being rebuilt in 1463 to plans by Bernardo Rossellino.
From the courtyard a passage leads to a delightful medieval garden where one can sit and have a picnic. It also has a viewing point of the valley below.
The church is open daily, but closed from 12:00 to 16:00. However, the courtyard and garden remains open all day.
Entry to the church is FREE.
The church is located Via Borgo XX Giugno . About 300 meters from San Domenico Church, off Corso Cavour. While on route to San Pietro you pass through a beautiful gate, the Porta San Pietro, from the 14th-15th century. (See photo bottom of page)
