The 3rd century BC Arch of Augustus (Arco di Augusto) is situated at Piazza Fortebraccio - and is the main gate into the north side of the historic centre. It is the only one of the six remaining city gates (originally there were seven or eight) that has not undergone considerable changes. It is also known as the Etruscan Arch.
The words "Augusta Perusia" appear on the two arched lintels, which was added in Roman times by Emperor Augustus to celebrate his conquest of the city around the year 40 BC.
The fountain on the left of the arch was completed in 1621.
