GALLERIA NATIONAL DELL'UMBRIA
(National Gallery of Umbria)

The National Gallery of Umbria is situated on the third floor of Palazzo dei Priori, off Corso Vannucci.

The Gallery was established in 1863, after Napoleon seized works of art from many of the city's churches , convents and monasteries. The Gallery was moved to its present location in 1879.

There are 23 rooms, which contain some of the most important collection of mediaeval and modern art in the region. Most works are from the thirteenth through the nineteenth centuries

Important works include...

In Room 1, five statues by Tuscan sculptor, Arnolfo di Cambio, including Donna alla Fonte, dated from around 1281. These statues were taken from a demolished public fountain that stood in what is now Piazza della Repubblica.

Also in Room 1 is a 1272 crucifix by Maestro di San Francesco. (named so because it is by an unknown artist)

Room 2 has a Madonna and Child with Angels by Duccio di Buonisegna (around 1305).

Room 4 has a polyptych of Sant'Antonius by Piero della Francesca (around 1460)

Room 21 has the 15th century Cappella dei Priori fresco cycle by Benedetto Bonfigli.
