GALLERIA DEGLI UFFIZI

The Uffizi Gallery is one of the oldest and most famous art museums in the world - housed in the Palazzo degli Uffizi, designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1560 to house the Florentine State's administrative and judicial offices.

The gallery started when Cosimo I dei Medici arranged for a display place in the Palazzo degli Uffizi for many of the paintings and sculpture collected by the Medici family. However, the 'true' gallery was created by Francesco I, Cosimo's son, who transformed the top floor of the Uffizi with paintings and statues. The gallery officially opened to the public in 1765.

Its collection comprises some of the world's most important masterpieces, including works by Italian masters Giotto, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Titian. Also important work by Dutch and Flemish masters Rembrandt and Rubens.
