The Accademia Gallery stands on a site formerly occupied by the ancient Monastery of San Matteo and Convent of San Niccolò di Cafaggio.
The main atttraction is Michelangelo's masterpiece 'David' (sculpted 1501 to 1504). The 5.17 metre marble statue portrays the Biblical King David in the nude, at the moment that he decides to battle with Goliath. In 1873, David formerly standing in front of Palazzo Vecchio, in Piazza della Signoria (a copy stands there now), was moved to the Gallery to protect it as exposure to atmospheric pollutants was causing damage. A special room within the building 'the Tribune', design by the architect Emilio De Fabris, was built between 1873 and 1882 to house the statue of David.
The gallery also contains unfinished scultures by Michelangelo, and several Renaissance paintings by varies artists including Sandro Botticelli.
