The Church of Santo Spirito, designed by Brunelleschi around 1428, may not look much from the outside (because the facade was never built), but the interior is a fine example of early Renaissance architecture.
The church's Latin cross plan with a nave and two aisles and around 38 side chapels are in harmonious proportions.
The church has many artworks, including works by Francesco Botticini, Andrea Sansovino, and Cosimo Rosselli.
In the chapels of the transept are frescoes by Filippino Lippi, including Madonna and Child with Saints.
The sacristy was designed by Giuliano da Sangallo in 1489, and contains a wooden crucifix by Michelangelo. (Note, if sacristy closed ask a member of staff to let you in!)
The Piazza where the church stands is a popular lively tree lined square with market stalls, cafes, restuarants and small shops. In fact, the whole area is a fascinating place to walk around.
