The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella was designed by two Dominican friars in the mid-13th century, but was not consecrated until 1420. The church has been remodelled several times since. The complex also includes the cloisters and the buildings of the former monastery.
Some of the highlights include...
Leone Battista Alberti designed the upper part of the marble facade of the church in the mid-15th century.
The pulpit was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1443. It is from this pulpit the first attack came on Galileo after he presented evidence that the sun is the centre of the solar system.
A wooden Crucifix by Giotto dated 1290.
The Holy Trinity is an early renaissance frescoe by Masaccio.
The church has many chapels including The Strozzi Chapel, which has a series of frescoes by Lippi.
The choir in the main chapel (Cappella Tornabuoni) contains a series of famous frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaio and his students probably including the young Michelangelo!
The end of the 13th century Gondi Chapel has a polychrome marble decoration by Giuliano da Sangallo dated around 1503, and also a famous wooden Crucifix by Brunelleschi dated from around 1410.
