Basilica di San Lorenzo is one of the largest churches in Florence. The complex is the burial place of most members of the Medici family.

It is said to be one of the oldest church's in Florence. It was first consecrated in 393, but has since been rebuilt many times. The church we see today is partially designed by leading Renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi in the 15th century.

Highlights within the church includes Sagrestia Vecchia (Old Sacristy) by Brunelleschi; two bronze pulpits by Donatello; altarpiece of the Annunciation in the north transept chapel by Fra Filippo Lippi.

Highlights within The Medici Chapels (access from the back of the church on Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini and a seperate entrance fee) includes, the Sagrestia Nuova (New Sacristy) based on Michelangelo's designs and who also designed the Medici tombs within including a sculture of Madonna and Child, and Tomb of Lorenzo which includes Dawn (female) and Dusk (male) - a pair of Michelangelo's most famous sculptures -and Day (male) and Night (female); The Cappella dei Principi (The Chapel of the Princes) - begun in the early 17th century to become the mausoleum of the Medici grand-dukes.

The Laurentian Library (Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana) by Michelangelo is accessed from the side of the church in the cloisters.

Church- 10am - 5pm (Times can change!)
Medici Chapels - 8.15am - 1.50pm
(Closed on the 2nd and 4th Sunday and 1st, 3rd and 5th Monday of each month)
