The imposing synagogue on Dohany Street was built by Ludwig Forster between 1854 - 1859, in the Byzantine-Moorish style, and is the largest working one in Europe seating sround 3, 000 - split into men and women galleries.
Inside the synagogue you have to wear a small skullcap, which is provided as you enter.
Next to the synagogue was the house where Theodore Herzl, the founder of the modern Zionist movement, was born. In the place of his house now stands the Jewish Museum.
In the rear courtyard is The Holocaust memorial, designed by Imre Varga. It resembles a weeping willow whose leaves bear inscriptions with the names Hungarian Jews who were murdered by the Nazis. There are also some large marble plaques inscribed with names of non-Jewish Hungarians who saved Jews during the Holocaust.
