The church is named after the Hungarian king, Matthias Corvinus, who is said to have ordered the construction of its original southern tower, or maybe because he held both his weddings here. However, officially it is named the Church of Our Lady.
Situated in the Castle district of Buda, next to the Fishermen's Bastion, Matthias Church was built around the 13th century and seen many changes over the centuries.
It was used as a mosque in 1541, following the Turkish occupation. After the Turkish expulsion in 1686, attempts were made to restore the church, but it is the restoration between 1874 and 1896 by architect Frigyes Schulek, in the Neo-Gothic style, that the church regained much of its former splendour.
The Museum of Ecclesiatical Art can be found in the church's crypt.
Several concerts take place at Matthias Church each year.
