On Gellert Hill in Buda, can be found three important sights: The Gellért Statue, The Liberation Monument & The Citadel as well as some splendid views!
Gellért Statue (Szt Gellért Szobor)
The Gellért Monument is a Budapest landmark, most impressive at night when it is floodlit. It is located near the top of Gellért Hill, overlooking the Elizabeth Bridge. The monument, designed by Gyula Jankovits and erected in 1904, is in honour of the 11th century bishop St Gellért who converted the Magyars to Christianity. Below the memorial is a man-made waterfall. You can get a close look at the statue by climbing the steps that lead from Elizabeth Bridge. Legends says that Gellért was put to death by pagans at this spot by putting him in a barrel and rolling it down the steep Gellért Hill and then throwing it into the Danube.
Liberation Monument (Szabadsag Szobor)
Located at the top of Gellert Hill, this monument by sculptor Zsigmond Kisfaludi strobl, was erected in 1947 by the Soviet's to commemorate the Nazis' defeat. Standing at 14 metres tall the statue of a woman bearing a palm leaf is visible from many points in the city. Originally, a Soviet soldier had stood below the main statue, but this was removed to Statue Park after the fall of communism.
The Citadel (Citadella)
Located at the top of Gellért Hill, the Citadel was erected in 1854 by the Habsburgs, after the suppression of the 1848-49 Hungarian revolution and war of independence. It now houses a hotel, restaurant and a open air museum.
The Citadella also hides a three-level air-raid bunker hosting a waxworks exhibition and an exhibition of historical articles and documents. (Times: Mon - Fri 09:00 - 21:00 / Sat 09:00 - 22:00/ Sun 08:00 - 21:00 - Price 1200 Forints)
