Situated on the Castle hill, around Matthias Church, the neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style Fisherman's Bastion, designed by Frigyes Schulek in 1895, was not built for defence, but as a lookout terrace. It takes its name from the guild of fishermen which was responsible for defending this stretch of the city walls in the Middle Ages.
It is a big tourist attraction for its viewing terrace looking out over Pest, as well as for its beautiful snow-white towers, which are said to represent the seven Magyar tribes that settled in the Carpathian Basin in 896.
