
The Hungarian National Museum is said to have been founded in 1802. It moved to its current location in 1846, in the neo-classical style building designed by Mihály Pollack.
The Museum's permanent collection displays the History of Hungary from the foundation of the state to 1990. Topics include the history of the first three hundred years (1000-1301) of the Hungarian kingdom, the age of the kings of the House of Arpad; Villages and towns in the second half of the 15th century; The Turkish Age; Transylvania and the royal Hungary; The Rákóczi war of independence; The rise and fall of the communist system in Hungary.
The museum also has several temporary Exhibitions.
It is said that in 1848, in the museum's garden Sándor Petofi recited the National Song that launched the revolution. The Upper House of the first representative parliament held its sessions in the Cereminial in 1848 and the Upper House held its sessions here until the building of the new House of Parlaiment.
