
The Hungarian Opera House, designed by Miklós Ybl in the neo-Renaissance style with elements of baroque, opened on 27 September 1884, in the presence of Franz Joseph I. The auditorium holds around 1261 seats.
In front of the building are statues of Ferenc Erkel, composer of the Hungarian national anthem, and the first music director of the Opera House. The other statue is of Hungarian composer, Franz Liszt.
Opera and Ballet are performed through the year, except usually July & August.
You can take a guided tour of this magnificent building daily at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. in English, German, Spanish, Italian, French and Hungarian languages. (price: 2,600 Forints). The Opera House can be visited only with a local guide!
The tours may be cancelled due to rehearsals or special events organised in the Opera House.
