The Rodin Museum of Paris displays the works of Auguste Rodin - the man who has become known as the father of modern sculpture. Famous works on display include: The Thinker; The Kiss; Nude of Balzac; Monument to Balzac; Gates of Hell; Burghers of Calais. The works are displayed inside the museum and in its extensive gardens.
Rodin went against the artistic convention of his day, and rather then make sculptures based on allergory and myth, he chose to make his work highly realistic. As a result his work was considered indecent and unfashionable, and it is only in the last decade of his life that he recieved the recognition he craved.
Though married to Rose Beuret, Rodin had a passionate affair with Camille Claudel, who was his pupil, model and lover. Under his tutelage, Claudel became a talented sculpture in her own right and a collection of her work is also exhibited here. (extra fee for this exhibition)
The Musée Rodin is housed in Hôtel Biron, a mansion built in the early 18th century. The mansion became the property of the state at the beginning of the 20th century and plans were drawn up to demolish the building. While the decision about Hôtel Biron' future was being made, the mansion was divided into small lodgings, rented out as private apartments. Rodin letted one of these apartments and set up his studio within.
Rodin pleaded with the state not to destroy Hôtel Biron and offered to donate all his property, correspondence and art work to the state if the French government would display the work in the mansion. His offer was accepted in 1916, the year before Rodin's death and the Hotel Biron was opened to the public in 1919 as the Rodin Museum.
