Founded in 1753 The British Museum holds in trust for the nation and the world a collection of art and antiquities from ancient and living cultures. Housed in one of Britain's architectural landmarks, the collection is one of the finest in existence, spanning two million years of human history.
The core of today's building, including the great south front, was designed in 1823 by Sir Robert Smirke in Greek Revival style, but not completed until 1852.
Highlights of the collections include:
*The Elgin Marbles, carvings from the Athenian Parthenon
*The Rosetta Stone
*Egyptian Mummies
