The Old-New Synagogue is now the oldest surviving example of the medieval twin-nave type of synagogue.
It is also the oldest preserved synagogue in the Central Europe.
It was built in an early Gothic style around 1270. It was originally called the "New" or "Great" Synagogue to distinguish it from an older house of prayer which did not survive. It was not until the 16th century, when other synagogues were established in Prague, that it became known as the "Old-New" Synagogue.
The main hall is the only existing medieval-type hall of its kind. The hall is vaulted by six 5-ribbed vault compartments supported by two octangonal pillars.
Services are still held in the Synagogue and follows orthodox custom, with separate seating for men and women during prayer services. Women sit in an outer room with small windows looking into the main sanctuary.
