The small Franciscan Garden, with its rows of white benches and cultivated rose bushes, is a peaceful oasis that lies just off Wenceslas Square (Entrance from Wenceslas Square can be gained through Svetozor Mall or by turning right on Vodickova street and then right into the passage leading into Franciscan Garden).
Though small, the garden has an attractive fountain, a children's play area and offers pleasant view of the church, Our Lady of the Snows.
The garden is a place to escape from the crowds. For example, if you have brought a hot dog from one of the street stalls in Wenceslas Square and are looking for a place to sit in comfort while you eat, then the Franciscan Garden makes an ideal retreat.
The garden was established in 1348 as part of a Carmelite monastery, which became the property of the Franciscans in 1604. The Franciscans grew flowers here until the monastery was sacked by robbers in the 17th century and the Franciscans were forced to leave. When they returned they converted the garden into a pharmacy garden growing medicinal herbs.
The Franciscans were expelled from the property by the communists in 1950 and shortly afterwards the garden was opened to the public. The garden was renovated between 1989 and 1992, during this work a beautiful gate showing 16 scenes from the life of St Francis was added to the entrance closest to Wenceslas Square.
