2/2 Museum of the City of Prague

The Museum of the City of Prague (Muzeum hlavního mesta Prahy) is displayed in several buildings in the city, but the main building is at Florenc, in Prague 8.

The building in Florenc was built specifically for the Royal Museum of Prague from 1896 to 1898 in Neo-Renaissance style designed by architect Antonin Balšánek.

The museum covers historic Prague with history of the city and its inhabitants from prehistoric times.

Exhibits include...

LANGWEIL'S MODEL OF PRAGUE: On an area of approximately 20 sq. metres, the historical centre of Prague is represented in detail in the form it had 150 years ago, which means that it includes hundreds of houses of the former Jewish Town and Old Town that have been demolished. More than two thousand buildings are rendered by this coloured model on the scale of 1:480 with all details of façade decorations and minutiae of yards, gardens and utility buildings inside the housing blocks and on the adjoining land. The author of the model was an employee of the University library Antonín Langweil (1791-1837).

PREHISTORIC PRAGUE: Brings answers regarding the prehistoric inhabitants of the Prague area between the beginning of the prehistoric era and the arrival of the Slavs: when did they come and what did they look like, where and how did they live, what did they eat, how did they manage, how did they dress and dress up, how did they think and how did they bury their dead. The exposition is based on the findings of experimental archeology and now includes new models, replicas and reconstructions.

MEDIEVAL PRAGUE: The next part of the exposition begins with a section dedicated to the foundation of the Prague Castle, Vyšehrad and the expansion of the Prague agglomeration in the 9th – 12th centuries. With the foundation of the Old Town and the Lesser Town in the 13th century, Hradcany and especially the New Town in the 14th century. Life of its citizens is documented by numerous objects from Prague households.

PRAGUE AT THE TURN OF THE MIDDLE AGES AND MODERN TIMES: At the beginning of the 1580s, Rudolph II, art patron and collector, moved his whole court to the Prague Castle. From the end of the 15th and from the 16th century have survived to our days some of the oldest views of Prague, a number of Renaissance architectonic fragments and construction elements from Prague houses as well as a countless amount of material evidence regarding the way of life of Prague inhabitants and their households.

BAROQUE PRAGUE: A collection of Baroque sculpture. Also many artifacts originally belonging to Prague guild corporations.
