The Toronto Transit Commission, or TTC, is responsible for providing public transit in the City of Toronto.
Bus
There are around 150 bus routes operated in the city, many of which connect to the subway. You can pay by cash (exact fare) on the buses. There is a night bus service. You would normally enter at the front of the bus and exit at the back.
Subway
The subway system has four lines. There are two main lines that cover the main inner city area - the U-shaped Yonge-University-Spadina Line and the east-west Bloor-Danforth Line. The other two lines head out of the city - Sheppard subway line in the north and the Scarborough RT in the east. The subway operates from around 06:00 - 01:30 (Mon - Sat); 09:00 - 01:30 (Sunday).
Taxi
Taxis (Cabs) can by hailed from the street. There are also taxi stands outside train station and some major hotels. Price is around $2.75 to start then around $1 per Km. (To book a taxi in advance see external link at bottom of page)
Streetcar
There are 11 streetcar routes situated downtown, particularly near the city's waterfront.
Ferry
Ferries depart for Toronto (Centre) Islands from the Harbour at the foot of Bay Street. price around $6 return.
Tickets
The same tickets are valid on buses, streetcar and the subway (metro). A single ticket costs around $2.75, but you can buy a pack of five which costs $11.25. If using public transport a lot then you can make savings buying a day pass for $9, or weekly pass for $32.25.
If you are changing from one means of transport to another you must get a free transfer pass from the subway station or bus driver. (a transfer ticket is not needed for passes)
Extra fare is required for Downtown Express routes and contracted routes operated by the TTC outside the City of Toronto.
Surburban Transport
GO Transit connects with every municipal transit system in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Buses and trains operate mainly from Union Station. See external link below.
