Toronto's New City Hall - designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell - is the city's fourth, and was built to replace the Old City Hall still standing nearby on the northeast corner of Queen and Bay Streets.
Revell's distinctive modernist design has three main buildings: a squat circular council chamber cradled by two curved office buildings.
Work on the New City Hall began in 1961 and was completed in 1967. The Hall was built on the site of the City's old China Town, and construction could only begin once the Chinese population had been forced to move by expropriation.
You can visit the New City Hall.
Nathan Phillips Square, named after the Mayor who strongly supported the construction of New City Hall, sits in front of the main entrance of the City Hall. The square was also designed by Viljo Revell.
The square is a lively gathering place, and hosts many public and civil events. At the square South end is a reflecting pool, a popular gathering place for people to relax in the summer, and ice skate in the winter.
The square has a small peace garden, which consists of a simple cube structure built round an eternal flame.
Toronto City Hall was seen twice in the Star Trek series: In the original (James Kirk) series in the episode "All Our Yesterdays"; and later in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Contagion," as a possible alien portal. It was also seen in the film Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), as the headquarters for the Umbrella Corporation.
