High Park is Toronto's largest park covering 161 hectares (399 acres), of which over one-third remains in a natural state. It is home to many species of wildlife, including birds, fish and animals.
Beautiful ornamental flower and shrub gardens can be located on the west-side of the park. Although collectively called Hillside Gardens, there are actually three distinct areas: Hillside Gardens, the Hanging Gardens and the Sunken Gardens.
Grenadier Pond, located in the West, is one of the most picturesque areas in the park. The pond's marshland attracts a wide variety of birds.
The park is home to some of Ontario's few remaining Oak tree savannahs - these towerering black Oak trees once covered most of Ontario.
The park is ideal for walking and has two large nature trails that take you through natural forest where you'll see a variety of wildlife and native plants and trees. For the less energetic there is a 25 minute scenic train ride.
Among the park's facilities are picnic tables, playing fields for soccer and baseball, tennis courts, a skating ring, an outdoor swimming pool, a zoo, and a children's play area.
Each summer the Canadian Stage Company performs a Shakespearan play at the park's amphitheatre.
The park is home to the historic Colborne Lodge. The Lodge was once the home of John George Howard, the man who founded High Park when he donated 160-acre of his estate to the city in 1873.
