The Bata Shoe Museum includes one semi-permanent and three changing exhibitions in specially-designed galleries
Hundreds of shoes (from a collection numbering over 10,000) are on exhibit in four galleries.
Footwear on display ranges from Chinese bound foot shoes and ancient Egyptian sandals to chestnut-crushing clogs and glamourous platforms. Over 4,500 years of history and a collection of 20th-century celebrity shoes in the "Star Turns" mini-theatre, are reflected in the semi-permanent exhibition, "All About Shoes".
The museum is named after its Founding Chairman Sonja Bata, who collected shoes as she travelled the world on business with her husband. In 1979 the Bata family established the Bata Shoe Museum Foundation to operate an international centre for footwear research and house the collection. In 1995 the Museum opened at its present location.
Designed by Raymond Moriyama and completed in 1995, the impressive modern building was inspired by the idea of a shoebox.
