The Roman Catholic Basilica of Notre-Dame was constructed between 1824 - 1829, to a neo-gothic design by James O'Donnell, an Irish-American Protestant from New York. Work began on the Basilica's colourful interior - designed by Victor Bourgeau - in 1874 and was completed in 1880.
The basilica's vaulted ceiling is decorated with 24 carat gold stars on an azure background, with the colours red, purple, silver and gold used throughout the basilica's interior.
The large and intricate wooden alterpiece and spiral staircase pulpit were created by Henri Bouriche. The building's western tower, named Preserverence, holds the 12-ton le Gros Bourdon - the largest bell in North America.
The basilica's stained Glass windows, made in France, were installed for the basilica's centenary in 1929, and reflect scenes from Montreal's religious and civic life.
Another feature of the Basilica is the Notre-Dame du Sacré-Coeur Chapel, rebuilt between 1979 and 1982, after the original was destoyed by fire on 7 Dec 1978, contains the monumental bronze reredos, composed on 32 seperate panels poured in England, desigined by Montreal sculpture Charles Daudelin.
