The Museum, which opened in 1992, is set atop the city's birthplace where the original colony was established in 1642.
It showcases archaeological remains from every period in the city's past.
The museum reveals authentic archaeological remains of original historical buildings along a underground tour route, including Montreal’s first Catholic cemetery (mid 17th century), brought to light during extensive archaeological digs in 1989.
You’ll also cross through a vaulted stone tunnel carrying what was once the Little Saint-Pierre River. Now it is a collector sewer dating back to 1832.
In the archaeological crypt is a Marketplace interactive installation. Relive a market day in 1750, with virtual characters in scenes recalling daily life as it once played out here in the town’s main public square.
It is best to start the tour of the museum with the 18-minute multimedia show in the auditorium behind the pay desk.
The Museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.
The museum has a cafe/restaurant and a Giftshop.
