The museum's collection has over 1,375,000 objects, images and manuscripts of the social history and material culture of Montreal, Quebec and Canada.
It has a permanant exhibition on the 2nd floor called "Simply Montreal - Glimpses of a Unique City' , which focuses on four main themes: the climate (wintering), the community (meeting), the economy (prospering) and leisure time (enjoying). Some 600 objects and 200 photographs from the McCord's collection is on view, including a variety of sports equipment and charming toys; and a collection of dresses and outfits worn in Montreal on all sorts of occasions.
Temporary Exhibitions, are held on the 1st and 3rd floors.
Inaugurated in 1921, the McCord embodies the vision of a passionate collector, David Ross McCord, whose abiding wish was to shed light on the history and cultures of his country and thus bring its people together. It moved to its current buiding (former McGill Union, designed in 1906 by Percy E. Nobbs) in 1971.
The museum has a cafe and a giftshop.
