
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has both a permanent collection and several temporary exhibitions.
Highlights include paintings by Renoir, Monet, Cézanne. Rembrandt, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Salvador Dalí.
The collection of almost 35,000 objects includes paintings, sculptures, works on paper, prints and drawings, photographs and decorative art objects – from Antiquity to today. The Museum continues to acquire new works to enrich its collections of Ancient Cultures, European Art, Canadian Art, Inuit and Amerindian Art, Contemporary Art and Decorative Arts.
The museum was founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal. In 1948 it became the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Today, it is housed in two buildings facing each other across Sherbrooke St, but connected by an underground passage. The first building was built in 1912 by Edward and William S. Maxwell, it is a grand structure with a white marble facade, a high portico with colonnade, a monumental staircase, and discreet decoration in low relief. The second modern building across the road was built in 1991, by architect Moshe Safdie.
The museum has a restaurant and a bookshop.
