The Montreal Botanical Garden (Jardin Botanique) was founded in 1931 by Brother Marie-Victorin.
It has some thirty thematic gardens, a collection of 22, 000 plant species and cultivars, 10 exhibition greenhouses, Tree house, and Arboretum, on a 75-hecture site.
From Mid-may to end of October a mini-train makes frequent trips around the site. It's the perfect way to get to different strategically located points in the Garden.
Within the Botanical Garden grounds is The Insectarium, which opened in February 1990. (Admission provides access to both attractions). Jewel-like beetles, giant walking sticks, butterflies with multicoloured wings, and furry spiders, all these different insects are laid out in display cases, vivariums and exhibition modules carefully designed so that everyone can learn more about insects and arthropods. It’s a veritable temple celebrating insects from around the world.
The Insectarium has a permanent exhibition called "Busy Bodies", which includes Termites, ants, honey bees, bumble bees and wasps, which are some of the most highly eusocial species, i.e. living in organized societies, in the animal kingdom. It also has temporary exhibitions and many Interactive games.
The Botanical Garden is close to other attractions including The Olympic stadium , the Montreal Tower Observatory and The Biodome, all a few minutes walk away.
