The Biosphere site is devoted to eco-action, showcasing, observing and studying water and the Great Lakes--St. Lawrence River ecosystem, offering interactive activities and exhibitions
The sphere was designed by architect Buckminster Fuller as part of Expo '67. It is the largest building of its kind in the world, its structure reproduces more than 75% of a sphere.
For several years after the World’s Fair, the Biosphère was used for many activities and attractions. In 1992, architect Éric Gauthier won an architectural competition to convert the Biosphère’s interior structure in keeping with the original design so as to house the country’s first museum on the subject of water, and was dedicated to the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence ecosystem. The museum opened in 1995.
