01  Grand Place (inc. Hotel de Ville)

Brussels main tourist attraction. This medieval square, with its 15th century gothic Town Hall, is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in Europe and has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1998. Enjoy a beer or meal in the square as you soak in the atmosphere.

02  Manneken Pis

The small boy peeing in the water fountain is to Brussels what the Statue of Liberty is to Manhattan or Big Ben is to London. Astonishingly, the statue is regularly dressed in costumes, many of which have been presented by visiting heads of state. It has been presented with well over 700 costumes - from Elvis Presley to a Tibetan monk!

03  The Atomium

One of the city's major landmarks this unusual monument was erected in 1958 as part of the World Fair exhibition. Modelled on an iron atom that has been magnified 165 billion times. The top sphere has a restaurant and provides panoramic views of the city .

04  Royal Palace (Palais Royal)

The official palace of the Belgium monarchy, and it is here that court ceremonies, royal audiences and state receptions are held. (Note: it is not the official residence of the Royal family!). If the Belgium flag is flying on top of the building it signifies that the Monarch is resident in the country. It is open to the public between July and September

05  Palace of Justice (Palais de Justice)

The Supreme Court of Law for Belgium. Commissioned by King Leopold II it was built between 1866 and 1883 by architect Joseph Poelaert in a neo-classical/eclectic design. There are good views of Brussels to the right of the Palace of Justice in Place Poelaert.

06  Cathedral of St Michael & St Gudule

The beautiful Gothic Cathedral is the national church of Belgium and it is here that royal weddings and funerals take place. Though dating from the 12th century, the church was only granted cathedral status in 1962. It is one of finest examples of Brabant Gothic architecture.

07  Bourse (Stock Exchange)

The Bourse was built 1868 to 1873 by Architect Léon Suys, and is one of the city's most elegant 19th century buildings. It does not contain the usual chaotic activities of stock brokers and traders as all trading is now computerized.

The most striking European Union building is the huge glass structure of the European Parliament - seating over 700 elected MEPs.

09   Basilique Nationale du Sacré-Coeur
