Parc Cinquantenaire (Park of the Fiftieth) was built to house the World Exhibition commissioned by King Leopold II to celebrate the 50th Jubilee of Brussels independence in 1880.
The park is dominated by a Triumphal Arch, designed by the French architect Charles Girault, on which sits a bronze sculpture of the raising of the Belgium flag.
On either side of the Arch are two large exhibition spaces, which are connected to the Arch by a gallery of columns decorated with colourful mosaics. The exhibition spaces now house the Royal Museum of Art & History, Royal Museum of Army & Military and the Auto-world museum.
Covering an area of thirty hectares, Parc Cinquantenaire is landscaped with picturesque gardens and pathways lined with trees.
